TIPS FOR VIRTUAL INTERVIEWS

In the past, it was already quite stressful to prepare for a Graduate Interview, but now there’s an additional challenge in the mix – it’s virtual!

The following tips will help you to prepare and ensure that you’re ready to wow the interviewers during your next interview.

Research

Do some homework about the company you’re interviewing with. This includes a quick visit to their website and the company’s LinkedIn page. Researching the industry in general will also provide you with some important insights into the environment you’re hoping to enter.

Plan

Prepare a list of questions you want to ask. It’s equally important to think about why you’re asking them. Also anticipate and prepare for the interviewers’ questions about your interest in the company, and why you’d be a good fit.

Prepare

Test your technology. It’s critical to ensure a smooth, secure and fast connection with the relevant Teams or Zoom software on which the interview is hosted. Also make sure that your camera is correctly positioned.

Set the scene and minimise your distractions

Find a room with good lighting and a blank wall for a background to ensure that you’re the focus. Once settled, eliminate distractions – nothing distracts an interview more than noise and outside distraction.

First impressions count

Even though it’s a virtual interview, you should still dress professionally. Ensure that you’re wellgroomed and look and feel your best. A neat appearance shows you’re serious about the position.

Mind your body language

Virtual engagements don’t present as many opportunities for body language cues as face-to-face meetings. You can’t shake hands or see someone’s levels of interest and comfort entirely. You can however sit up straight, smile and keep the camera at eye level, maintaining eye contact and confidence throughout.

Make a connection

It’s not easy to make a connection with everyone, and it’s especially tricky during a virtual interview, so look for areas of connection and commonality with your interviewers. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions about why they love their work or the company.

Follow up

Let the company know that you’re enthusiastic about a future with them and reiterate why you think you’d be a good fit for the position. Follow up on the interview with a note, thanking the panel for their time to meet with you.
