John Smit was one of International Rugby’s most successful captains and players of all time. He was the captain of the Springboks, the South African Rugby team (ending his career with 111 Springbok caps, 83 of which were as captain), leading the Springboks to World Cup glory in 2007 and was inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame in 2011.
After ending his rugby career with Saracens in the UK in 2013 John took up the position of CEO of Sharks Rugby for three years. He currently lives with his family in Pretoria where he is employed with SSG Holdings as the Group CEO since 2019. John keeps his hand in the game that gave him so much by sitting on the SA Rugby Board on various committees and is CEO of the World Rugby Centurions Club as well as The Cell C South African Rugby Legends Association, he also does some rugby punditry for Supersport as well as dabble in both coffee and brandy by starting his own Barneys Blend coffee and joining a team of players to create Avante Cape Brandy.
